Studying the Slovak Language

Second foreign language since the 2020–2021 academic year.

At Mukachevo General Secondary School of Levels I–III No. 13, the study of the Slovak language as a second foreign language was introduced from the 2020–2021 academic year, following a parent survey and a decision of the teachers' council. In the 2022–2023 academic year, 287 students in grades 5–7 study Slovak.

Studying the Slovak language opens up a number of opportunities for schoolchildren. First of all, they learn to speak and understand Slovak and to discover many interesting things about the country that borders Zakarpattia. In the future, they can use the knowledge they have gained when travelling in Slovakia or studying at Slovak universities.

In 2021, the school administration sent an appeal to the Consulate of Slovakia in Uzhhorod about the need to organise international cooperation with educational institutions in Slovakia. In order to exchange experience, an agreement with a school in the city of Presov was prepared. However, because of the COVID-19 pandemic and the war, the signing of the agreement has been postponed. In 2022, with the assistance of the Consulate of Slovakia, the government of Bratislava allocated 4,000 euros for the renovation of the Slovak language classroom and the purchase of technical equipment and some furniture.
