Forms of Education
Individual (Home-Based) Education
Individual (Home-Based) Education – a way of organising learning activity that follows a set, predetermined schedule, is provided by teaching staff at the students' place of residence (at home) and is organised to ensure citizens' right to complete general secondary education.
The legislation defines three types of individual education:
- external study (extern);
- family (home) education;
- pedagogical patronage.
Students can be transferred to individual education both at the beginning of and during the school year. However, external study and family education have a restriction – no later than 3 months before the annual assessment.
EXTERNAL STUDY
With external study, students master all of the material independently and remotely, after which their knowledge is assessed at school during the annual attestation. This form of education is often chosen by people who are moving abroad or who want to complete the programme in certain subjects, or even several grades, faster and obtain a Ukrainian certificate.
For example, these may be children who are professionally engaged in art or sports, or who have high learning potential and wish to finish school early. External study can also be organised for foreigners or stateless persons who permanently reside in Ukraine, for refugees, and for citizens of Ukraine who live in non-government-controlled territories or along the line of demarcation.
Documents required for enrolment in external study:
- an application from one of the parents (guardians) or from the child, if they are of age;
- the child's birth certificate or passport (copy);
- medical certificate 086-1/o;
- a document confirming the grounds for organising external study (for example, a letter from a club sports federation);
- a document on education, if there is one (otherwise the school will first assess the student's level of knowledge).
FAMILY EDUCATION
Family education places the organisation of the educational process on the parents (legal representatives) who want and are able to teach their children at home. This option is used by families who, for certain reasons, do not want the child to be at school (because of bullying, the impossibility of an individual educational path, etc.). And although these parents often have no pedagogical education, they are fully engaged in their children's needs and have a clear idea of their abilities, interests and talents, and the specifics of their motivation.
If they wish and at their own expense, parents may involve other persons (teachers, tutors, mentors, etc.) in the child's education. At the same time, knowledge will still be assessed by the school, and this assessment takes place every semester (once every six months) or more often.
Documents needed to arrange family (home) education:
- an application from the child's parents. The written wish of the parents to organise this form of education for their child is automatically considered the grounds.
PEDAGOGICAL PATRONAGE
Pedagogical patronage is individual education in which, unlike other forms, teachers are involved at all stages. Most often this type of education suits children who, for health reasons, cannot attend school every day and study in a group.
The particular feature of this form is that the child not only studies regularly with teachers, but also periodically joins the student community for socialisation (for example, during class and school-wide events), has the right to use all of the school infrastructure (the library, gym, canteen, etc.), and can count on psychological support.
Pedagogical patronage is also organised for:
persons under 18 who live in settlements (or are in custody or sentenced to imprisonment) where the number of students does not allow a class to be formed – that is, fewer than five persons;
children who are receiving inpatient treatment;
refugee children, children of foreigners and stateless persons who are held in temporary accommodation centres.
The number of study hours per week for students under pedagogical patronage is as follows:
- 10 hours for students in Grades 1–4;
- 14 hours for students in Grades 5–9;
- 16 hours for students in Grades 10–11.
Documents that must be submitted to the school to organise pedagogical patronage:
- an application from one of the parents;
- a certificate (conclusion) of the medical advisory commission on the state of health.
If, before the transfer to pedagogical patronage, the child studied at the school at their place of residence, the teachers will come to their home according to a schedule agreed with the parents. If the school is far away (and you do not want to transfer to another, closer one), it is a matter of agreement: the child can come on set days to study in person, and online learning tools can also be used.
This option is implemented through an individual curriculum, which is created for the student at school, necessarily in consultation with at least one of the parents.
Individual education remains free of charge for parents, and the teachers involved in working with the child will receive additional pay in line with the added teaching hours.
Finally: students who study in the individual form have the right to take part in olympiads, competitions, tournaments and contests on a general basis. They can also be awarded certificates of merit, letters of thanks, and gold and silver medals for academic achievement.
