Children with Special Educational Needs

It is undeniable that every child is special. Yet there are children who are called "special" not to emphasise the uniqueness of their abilities, but to note the special needs that set them apart from other children. Regardless of health status or the presence of a physical or intellectual impairment, every person has the right to a full life and to education of the same quality as that of everyone else.

ADVICE FOR PARENTS

1. Never pity your child because they are different.

2. Give your child your love and attention, but do not forget the other family members who need them too.

3. No matter what, keep a positive image of your child.

4. Organise your daily life so that nobody in the family feels like a "victim" by giving up their personal life.

5. Do not shield your child from responsibilities and problems. Involve them in solving everyday matters.

6. Give your child the opportunity to act and make decisions independently.

7. Do not be afraid to refuse your child something if you consider their demands excessive.

8. Talk to your child more often. Remember that neither the television nor the computer will replace you.

9. Do not limit your child's contact with peers.

10. Turn to teachers and psychologists for advice more often.

11. Read not only pedagogical literature, but also fiction.

12. Reach out to families who have children with special needs. Share your experience and learn from the experience of others.

13. Remember that one day your child will grow up and will have to live independently. Prepare them for future life. Talk with them about the future.
